Purpose of the job
To prevent outages in the high voltage electricity grid, TenneT operators have to act on (upcoming) congestions. Because of the increased volumes and increased weather dependency this is happening more often and closer to real-time. Therefore the Control Room of the Future program at TenneT launched a Congestion Management project which aims to facilitate the operators with decision support on congestion mitigating measures. As decisions need to be taken under time pressure in a real-time process, and the solution space is very large, machine learning (ML) solutions are foreseen to play a role in the decision support tool.
You will be working in a small multidisciplinary team with business experts, data engineers and data scientists. The aim is to realize decision support on remedial actions to solve congestions via several types of algorithms and visualization of the results and their context. The work is done in an agile way, with a focus on fast results: minimum viable products, that can be extended or improved in next iterations. Integration with existing tooling in the Control Room is part of the roadmap. The development environment is partly on-premise, partly in the cloud. The usual data science/data engineering tooling is available.
Your profile and background
Your role as a ML engineer at TenneT
With your technical skills you build, deploy, and maintain ML solutions in a production environment according to current best practices. More precisely, you build solution pipelines (including model training and evaluation) that are optimized, robust, and scalable. Subsequently, you deploy ML models ensuring model serving, model versioning, and model monitoring. Moreover, the following expertise is highly valued (in order of relevance):
1) You are familiar with approaches to sequential decision making, for example, (deep) reinforcement learning and corresponding tooling (e.g. RLlib).
2) You are familiar with building, deploying, and maintaining interactive dashboards. Ideally, you have experience with designing human-machine interfaces in control room contexts.
3) You possess power system knowledge.
With your social skills you are good team player. You are eager to learn from as well as to share with others in your team and all colleagues within TenneT. You are able to communicate productively with business representatives in order to understand the business context and to identify the actual business goals.
Additional relevant expertise
* Writing clean code according to software development standards.
* Able to work agile, in particular, working in a team and working according to Scrum.
* Experience with deployment of code and CI/CD pipelines. Experience with deployment in different IT environments.
* Experience working on premise as well as in the cloud.
* Preferably a master degree in a relevant area like Data Science, Applied Math, Applied Physics, Engineering;
* Excellent communication skills in Dutch and English (both verbally and written) is a must, German is a pre.
